Car of the Week: Porsche 550 Spyder |
Hey Guys
Today another Car of the Week, the famous and one of the most reproduced classics ever, the Porsche 550 Spyder.
Only 90 ones were built between 1953 and 1956 the 550 was Inspired by the first real Porsche, the 356, and was designed for becoming a competitive Part as a factory car in Auto Racing. The low height was a highly positive aspect, beside that Porsche had chosen it to be efficient for racing, the former German Formula 1 driver Hans Herrmann drove under closed railroad crossing gates during the Mille Miglia in 1954, while all the other drivers and Cars had to await the arriving Train.
Later the 550's were produced by Wendler in Reutlingen and sold for 24.600 DM (Deutsche Mark). The later 1956 evolution version of the model, the 550A, which had a lighter and more rigid spaceframe chassis, gave Porsche its first overall win in a major sports car racing event, the 1956 Targa Florio.
The 550 Spyder became pretty famous when Actor James Dean died cause of an tragic Crash with his "Little Bastard" in 1955, just seven days after his actor colleague Alex Guinness told him about the 550 "If you get in that car, you will be found dead in it by this time next week!". It had the serial number 550-0055.
Among the AC Cobra or the Lotus Seven the 550 is one of the most reproduced classics. There are some Companys like "Boulder Speedster", "Holmes Motor Company" or "Alloycars" which are specialized in building almost exact replicas from the original Porsche blueprints.
