Auto Bild Eclusive: Is the EU Tire-Label useless?

Auto Bild Exklusiv

The new EU eco-label provides customers when purchasing tires any orientation - on the contrary: it confuses the buyer. As reported in the AUTO BILD on Friday appearing Issue (No. 49), the labels can mislead consumers quickly. The reason: the eco-certificate is not issued by a testing organization, but by the manufacturers themselves, the test standards allow manufacturers much leeway. Therefore, the results are not comparable. The classification into one of the classes is up to the manufacturers.

Similar to the markings on electrical equipment are from November to green tires in the conditions prescribed by the EU Class "A" (excellent) rated up red "G" (bad). The tire labeling regulation should specify the information requirements for fuel efficiency, wet grip and external rolling noise. Due to the different standards of the company possible inconsistencies. It turned AUTOBILD firmly large quality differences within the classes. The wet braking test showed for example that some tires that were on the wet grip marked with a "C", and later came to a halt, as others who have been the poorer class "E" category.

In the classification results in additional difficulties for the customer, because different than indicated by the labels, there is no seven quality classes. Because the rolling resistance, the class D is omitted and the wet grip classes D and G, wins the consumer the impression when buying a marked "C" tire to acquire a much higher quality product than the purchase of a "E" tire. In fact, however, the models stand qualitatively only slightly from each other. Added to this is that, while each tire carries a label, but the manufacturers do not test each tire model. Instead, similar material blends and widths are divided into groups and given calculated unit values. Another problem: Because the most important criterion for winter tires, the performance on snow and ice does not check the labels for these tire group is not meaningful.

The federal states are to verify the accuracy of the information provided by the manufacturer in the future, but according to the German Environmental Aid (DUH) apart from Thuringia No regions prepared for this task.
