Hey Guys
Can you remember the Days when you just got your driving license and had to ask your parents to "borrow" their Car to drive around? It was always hard to get the keys, right? (Except your were lucky enough to have your own Car...) It was definitely not because they don't trust you (or perhaps exactly why?!), it was because they were feared - because of you, your driving skills, your too fast driving with too loud music, and maybe also because of the Car and they didn't wanted it to be crashed.
In the "old days" there were no systems or gadgets available to help your parents to trust you and to give you the Keys easier, but welcome to the 21th Century, here is everything possible!
Thanks to Fords MyKey System parents will give their children the Keys easier
and with less worries.
Now I'm answering some Questions about My Key, if you have any more, comment below and I'll answer them as well!
What is MyKey?
MyKey is part of the new Fiestas safety and driver assistance package (Including SYNC Emergency Assistance and Ford's Intelligent Protection System with seven airbags). It's a keyless system ( you don't have to insert the key into the ignition anymore) and you can program different settings like earlier low-fuel warnings, limit the speed to a certain level or just give a sound when you exeed them.
In what stages does it regulate?
The "Administrator" can change several settings as limiting the audio to 40% of the absolute sound level or limit the Car to a maximum speed of 130 kmh / 80 mph or just giving a sound warning when you're driving faster. Also the Audio will not work if the driver is not wearing the seat-belt or the tank display will blink earlier, when the Car is running out of fuel.
Isn't it "dangerous"?
Not more than anything else. In fact it is supportive for the drivers safety. As the general speed limit in Europe is at 120 kmh / 75 mph you will still have some space left, in case of an dangerous situation, to accelerate up to 130 kmh / 80 mph. As well as you can concentrate more on driving when the volume is not at the maximum, the 40% limit can "help" instead of endanger the driver.
Is it always active?
The Fiesta works with a maximum of 8 different programmable keys. One of them is the administrator key and you can do whatever you want when you are driving with this one, key less. For example you can program one key with the limited sound and for example another one with the "no belt no music"-function (Beltminder officially called) AND the limited sound. So you can have several functions for, for example, several drivers or several weekdays or several cities you're driving to or or or.
So with a programmed key there are a few functions always active, with the administrator key nothing.
What is the price for it? Is it an "extra" option?
No, it costs you nothing extra. As the first Ford Car for the European market MyKey will be introduced with the Fiesta in early 2013. In the US the Focus with MyKey was already introduced a few years ago and quickly gained a high popularity, by parents AND their young driver kids.
For 2015 Ford plans to roll-out the technology across the complete product-line, as they already standarised it at most of the North American Ford models.
And as European MyKey system architect says "Young drivers are not too keen on MyKey until they learn that it often improves the chances their parents will allow them to drive in the first place."
