The newly opened Skoda Muzeum in Mlada Boleslav tells the Story of Vaclav Laurin and Vaclav Klement and how Skoda became such an successful Company.
It all startet in December 1895 when Mechanic Vaclav Laurin and the booksmith Vaclav Klement started to produce bicycles in Mlada Boleslav. Already 4 Years later they were the biggest Bicycle Production Company in the whole Country and started to produce Motorbikes in the same year. In 1904 they intorduced a 4-cylinder Motorbike with 570ccm and won several races as well as the official world cup in 1905.
After some Automobile Prototypes L&K started to produce their first Car at their Factory in Mlada Boleslav in 1905, the Voiturette A. Several Models followed the next years, such as a 8-cylinder with 4,9 liters. The Company was growing and growing, they became joint-stock company and also the biggest automobile manufacturer in the empire of Austria-Hungaria. They were exporting the Cars all over the world and, of course, took part in the most imporatant motor shows in Leipzig, Paris, Berlin and St. Petersburg.
To strengthen the market postition they merged with the Skoda-Factories from Pilsen in the 1920s and began to produce Vehicles with 4-, 6-, and 8-cylinders up from then under the shared company-name Skoda. Did you know that nowadays names like Rapid or Superb were already used up from 1934? They exceeded the number of 5000 produced vehicles per modell soon but through the second world war they had to stop to produce their passenger cars and produced military vehicles instead.
In 1991 the Skoda automobilova a.s. became the fourth Company for the Volkswagen Group and in already in 1996 they celebrated the first million of produced cars in Mlada Boleslav.
Nowadays Skoda is the most successful import brand in Germany with more than 190.000 registrations, per year and importing their Cars to more than 100 Countries worldwide.
